Don't bother trying to get the shuttle if your flight arrives after hours. No one's there. If you're stuck in that situation, just go to Hertz and tell them you're with Dollar or Thrifty. They could possibly help you out if you show proof of your original reservation.
I hope this helps. Policies can change so this post may be outdated, and I do reiterate, I don't represent the company anymore.
Whether you're using the drop box, or returning your rental vehicle, just park your car anywhere in the front of their store and an on-site shuttle will bring you back.
We had a good experience with our rental car from Thrifty. Decent rates and the car was clean. Rented a Kia Soul--would rent it again. Was comfortable with lots of storage room. It didn't seem to guzzle as much gas as other cars I've rented.

Get the shuttle to come by using the public phone in the baggage claim area toward the escalator (Note: the shuttle does NOT run every 15 minutes). Shuttle ride is like 2-3 minutes, which may seem inconvenient to a bunch of people but you could potentially save a lot with a better rate. Look for the Dollar or Thrifty logo for the extension. If you can't find it, go ask Hertz (who works with them) on how to contact them.
No stars! Have used Dollar and Thrifty in many locations and only have good things to say. But NOT at this location. Landed at Albany International Airport and tried to take a cab to the off premise location, they couldn't drive me. I have to take the Thrifty shuttle. Finally found the telephone for the shuttle, kept ringing BUSY and after 5-6 tries gave up and called the 800 number...they could only confirm my reservation but NOT HELP get that shuttle to pick me up! I've booked cars off premise all the time now, because it's cheaper and usually a little more effort but never this difficult. Luckily, had a second car rental reservation with Hertz on airport premise. Employees were very polite, helped me with my luggage and offered me water. Got a really nice VW Passat from Hertz and they treated me like the valued Gold Club member, that I am! Next trip to Albany will definitely skip Thrifty and reserve with Hertz!
Unless they have changed, hours are:
Stay on your toes! Almost wouldn't allow us to leave without the EZ Pass access and additional insurance. Customers are allowed to say, "No, thank you." Even if it takes 25 times.
If you plan to return the car outside of business hours, ask the counter representative. They will give you instructions on what to do. Last time I was there, they let people return cars at the Hertz car rental return location at the airport, but policy could have changed. They also have a drop box in front of their store, but IMO it's only worth using if you have someone that can pick you up when you return the car.
Open holidays, but hours are shortened.
Like others mentioned before, it's not in the airport, however they do have a shuttle service that takes you 2 minutes down the road.
They tried to scam me. Received a bill in the mail after my trip saying that I activated the EZ Pass plate by going through a toll, and that they would charge my credit card $47. This was a complete scam, as I never went through a toll road. When I called them, they were trying to tell me I went through a toll booth 2 hours from the store, 6 minutes after I rented the car. I called them out on their scam and suddenly they said they wouldn't charge me anymore!
